PAINTINGS 2002
After several years of exploring abstraction and paintmakig techniques, in 2002 I returned to painting personal imagery. This suite of paintings nods to mapping, diary-keeping and calendars, as well as to annotation such as that found along the borders of atlas pages or on the backs of photographs. They do go off in different thematic directions, however. Some offer personal stories as a kind of meditation on the image (Moby Dick, Paradise, Chicago), stories that hopefully have implications beyond personal experience. Others, such as Depth Charge, The Nature of Sand or Rumor, seem to be a more conscious attempt to construct metaphors. A riff on metaphor-building can be found in the furniture juxtapositions of Nephew...Summers, and Untitled (Niagara). With these paintings I began to number all of my work sequentially and often stamped everything with the dates I worked on them.
